Thinking about
swimming a few laps before breakfast? Check out this man made
"lagoon" dubbed the world's largest outdoor swimming pool at the San
Alfonso del Mar Resort at Algarrobo, Chile.
The coast-hugging pool is all man-made
with a bit of patented technology that uses water from the nearby
Pacific Ocean to fill it. According to the Guinness World
Records, which deemed it the world's largest pool in 2007, the
lagoon measures 3,324 feet long. The pool was completed in December
2006. The pool's creator, Crystal Lagoons, claims it is six
times bigger than its closest competitor — the Orthlieb Pool in
Casablanca, Morocco, which measures more than 1,500 feet long.
The white-sand beach along the pool's edge also is man-made. Pool
creator Crystal Lagoons has announced plans to build a slightly
bigger pool — one of 12 giant lagoons planned — at Sharm el Sheikh
beach in Egypt, which is expected to be completed in July. La
Playa del Sol Group is now in discussions
with Crystal Lagoons of Santiago, Chile to become part of Phoenix's
La Playa del Sol.
